There is a table of watches observed which gives dates and case serial numbers. But the case numbers seem to not have been allotted consecutively.

Interestingly, in the case of clip-back watches, often the last 3 digits (or sometimes 4 on steel watches) of the case serial number are stamped on the rim of the case near one of the lugs - see below (283 stamped on rim near top left lug)

I received information that a watch allegedly owned by my late great uncle who died during WW1 in 1918 was in the possession of my second cousin.
